Let’s talk about the dark

A few weeks ago, I heard this phrase at church: “If you can’t find God, tell Him.”

One of the women who leads worship said it while she was praying.

I’ve been stuck on it since.

A month ago I got a tattoo that I absolutely adore. The artist did a fantastic job interpreting my ideas, so now I have a permanent reminder of God’s words in Genesis 1 as He created this earth – “Let there be light.”

Life is hard. Sometimes it gets really, really dark. Whether it’s because of circumstances outside of our control or because of choices we make; sometimes things just go so ridiculously wrong & suddenly we’re left wondering why we can’t see through the shadows.

I will honestly admit that before she said the words “If you can’t find God, tell Him”, I wasn’t focused on her prayer. I was in my own head, until I heard those words.

It was if I had never heard them before, as if the thought had never occurred to me.

Darkness is tough, it will drain you as quickly as it can, and then it will keep you. It becomes familiar and convinces you that being huddled and alone in the dark is better than living life as God calls you to live it.

We get so comfortable in the dark.

But, that’s not what God intended or wants for humanity (note: present tense).

Rather, He gives us light – the Light – over & over again.

Genesis 1:3. Psalm 27:1. Matthew 5:16. John 1:5. John 8:12. Ephesians 5:8. 1 Peter 2:9.

In fact, He calls us out of darkness into His marvelous light (1 Peter 2:9).

And guess what? Even when it’s darker than it’s ever been and we can’t see a thing – not the people who loves us, not our hand in front of our face, and not God – we can tell Him.

We can tell the Creator of the universe that we can’t find Him.

When our feet have been knocked out from under us, when the air has been sucked out of our lungs, when our ears are still ringing from the explosion that has rocked our world, when our eyes are still blurry: He’s still there.

I’m not saying that the darkness is magically lifted overnight by telling God that we don’t know where He is. In fact, because we are so stubborn and get so okay with living in the dark, it will be a process. Us working with God as He works for us and through us.

But, He does not forsake us. He does not leave us. This is still Plan A in His book – always, always Plan A.

I can’t wrap my head around that fact. I don’t surprise God, but He will forever surprise me with His love, mercy, and grace.

I think we all need that reminder – that there is light because God says so.

So, I write this to anyone struggling right now, who is in the dark and can’t quite find the light switch on the wall: yes, it is dark, but darkness cannot stay if you invite God into it with you.

Darkness cannot comprehend the Light (John 1:5).

Remind yourself of that. Please.

xx.
